How to Design your WebSite and Tips to be Successful

7 Tips for Designing Your Web Pages

Website pages play an import role in your overall website design and how Google ranks your website. There are many options available to create a website. However, not all options allow you to create a great website. Therefore, it is necessary to understand what elements are needed to create your web pages. Furthermore, it is important to stay away from website templates and one-step website designs. Follow these 7 design tips to create your website pages.

1. Page or Content Title:

The HTML title element needs a strong title that stands for your document. When selecting your title:

  1. Never use “Select One” as your title.
  2. Don’t use titles longer than 60 to 80 characters.

2. Link Text:

Avoid using “click here” as your link text. A link is a call for your readers to perform an action. Therefore, make your linking text meaningful.

  1. Link text should explain what it offers.
  2. Avoid verb phrases in the link text.
  3. Make link text informative.
  4. Avoid a mechanical operation such as “click”.

3. Links in Documents:

It is important to use HTML and XHTML links in your documents. This helps your readers find externally related information. Furthermore, links help readers to navigate your website.

4. Color:

When designing your web pages if you specify one color, make sure you specify them all. Use “Cascading Style Sheets” when assigning color to your web pages. Therefore, you will need to assign the colors to your background, foreground, and links.

5. Font Size:

Small text or font size doesn’t give your web page a sleek appearance. Furthermore, it is difficult to read small font sizes across all platforms. The basic rule for the size of your web page font is to use a font size large enough so your readers don’t need to enlarge or reduce the size of your text.

6. Date Format:

Stay away from the numbering format when you write a date such as, 05/02/15. Instead, use:

  • YYYY – the year with all 4 digits.
  • MM – the month such as 01 for January
  • DD – the day of the month such as 01 to 31

Use the international date format for all your dates on your website. YYYY-MM-DD.

7. URLs:

When you link your post to an outside source pay close attention to the URLs you use. There is nothing more frustrating than clicking on a link and the website is gone. Therefore, periodically check your external links and URLs to verify they still exist.
